Egg Donation in Australia FAQ

How successful is IVF on first try?

We calculate IVF treatment success rate as the number of favourable results (the number of clinical pregnancies or live births) divided by the number of procedures performed (number of embryo transfers, for example). But it is important to note that there are various ways to calculate the success rates and factors that may affect the result of the treatment (e.g. age of the child-bearer) as depicted in the graph below.

What happens if implantation is not successful?

We describe an implantation failure as three or more failed IVF cycles using fertilized eggs (with good quality embryos) or implantation not occurring after transferring over ten ‘good-looking’ embryos over many cycles. Failing to implant an embryo can be attributed to two reasons: the embryo isn’t good enough (genetically abnormal) or the endometrium is not “receptive” (allows the embryo to implant) enough. But you can always try again for another cycle of treatment.

Should I have treatment in Australia or abroad?

When choosing a clinic for treatment, consider egg availability, anonymity, safety, cost, and practicality. Plus, as much as we hope for positive results, treatment may fail, which ushers another round of travel, accommodation costs, adjustments to medical insurance and taking time off to fit with treatment timing. Consider all these additional hidden IVF costs abroad to make sure you have a truly fair comparison between treatment at home and abroad.

How can I make my IVF transfer successful?

IVF treatment is expensive, exhausting, and often results in heartbreak (e.g. implantation failure). But you don’t have to beat yourself up as you still can maximise the success of your treatment. The basics include taking medications according to your doctor’s instructions, eating a healthy diet, avoiding products containing endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and not taking pregnancy tests immediately.

How soon can I try IVF again?

As a rule of thumb, it is ideal to wait four to six weeks after a negative pregnancy test before starting another round of IVF.
